In June 1985, a fifteen-year-old boy started down a mountain trail. He was alone. He was supposed to reach the base in under an hour. He has not been seen since.

His name was Marco Aurélio. He was the monitor of Scout Group 240. He carried a backpack, a compass, and a whistle. As he descended, he marked the trail: he carved his group’s number into the stones along the way. A record, a message, a map of where he had passed. The marks stop at a point on the trail that has no fork, no clearing, and no explanation.

Pico dos Marins

Pico dos Marins rises 2,420 meters above sea level in the Paraíba Valley region of São Paulo state. It is not the most accessible mountain in Brazil. Its slopes are covered in dense Atlantic Forest, and in certain stretches of the trail, visibility drops to three meters in every direction.

In 1985 it was a regular training destination for scout groups in the region. It was not considered dangerous. It was not considered mysterious. The group that climbed in June of that year was experienced: four boys and their adult leader. They had done it before. They knew the mountain. The mountain did not know them in the same way.

The last morning

Marco Aurélio was fifteen, and as the group’s monitor, leadership was part of his role. When one of the scouts was injured on the upper trail, the decision seemed logical: he knew the way down, he was capable, he was trusted. The leader sent him ahead, alone, to the base, to get help and call for rescue.

Marco Aurélio adjusted his backpack and began the descent. As he walked, he carved his group’s number into the stones of the trail. Group 240. One stone, then another, then another. A clear record of his passage. The last stone is still there.

Where the marks stop

The Group 240 marks continue for several hundred meters down the trail. Then they stop. Not at a fork in the path. Not at a clearing where someone could turn off. Not at a cliff edge or a drop. The trail continues downward, unbroken. The forest is continuous on both sides. There is no point at which Marco Aurélio could have left the trail without pushing through dense, impenetrable Atlantic Forest.

And yet the marks stop. The stone reads 240. After that stone: nothing. No more marks. No footprints beyond that point. No sign that he continued. No sign that he turned back. Investigators at the site confirmed there was no alternative path, no fork, no detour at the point where the last mark sits. The trail simply continues downward. Without him. As if, at that specific point on that specific trail, Marco Aurélio simply stopped existing.

The whistle in the dark, and the lights

On the first night, the remaining group waited at higher altitude. The mountain around them was completely dark; the Atlantic Forest absorbs sound and light in equal measure. At some point after dark, they heard a whistle from the forest below. A clear signal. They answered. The forest went silent. They called again. Nothing. The next day, searchers combed that area. They found nothing: no footprints, no disturbance, no trace of the source of the whistle.

That same night, several witnesses in the region reported lights in the sky over Pico dos Marins. They were not aircraft — the movement pattern was wrong. Cold blue lights, moving without sound, moving without the logic of anything man-made. Multiple witnesses, independent reports. They are part of the official record of this case.

Twenty-eight days, and nothing

The organized search began the morning after Marco Aurélio was reported missing. At its peak, it involved hundreds of people: civil defense, military police, the fire brigade, volunteer teams, scout groups from across the region. They covered every accessible trail on the mountain. They searched below the tree line, above it, and through the forest in every direction from the point where the marks stop. They brought dogs. The dogs found no scent trail beyond the last marked stone. None.

Twenty-eight days. They found nothing. Not his backpack. Not his whistle. Not a scrap of clothing. Not a footprint past stone 240. Not a body.

2021: technology found nothing either

The case was never officially closed. In 2021, a team returned to Pico dos Marins with tools that did not exist in 1985: thermal imaging drones, modern excavation equipment, ground-penetrating radar. They remapped the area around the last marked stone. They identified specific zones for excavation based on the thermal data. They dug.

They found nothing. The same result. Thirty-six years later, with technology capable of detecting a body buried six meters deep. Nothing. The case remains officially open.

The mountain is still there

Pico dos Marins has not changed in forty years. The trail Marco Aurélio walked on that June morning in 1985 is the same trail hikers climb today. The stones are still there. Some still bear the Group 240 marks. The last stone — the last record of where he was — is still there.

His family has waited forty years for an answer. They have not received one. The searches found nothing. The drones found nothing. The excavations found nothing. Witnesses heard a whistle in the dark and saw lights that had no reason to be in that sky. And at a specific point on a specific trail, a fifteen-year-old boy left his last mark on a stone and walked into the forest.

He did not arrive. He has not been found. Stone 240 remains. Marco Aurélio does not.
